MTH 121

Vectors, Geometry and Dynamics

This course introduces students to vector algebra, coordinate geometry and elementary mechanics. It builds the mathematical foundation needed for analysing quantities with magnitude and direction, solving geometry problems, and interpreting basic motion and force systems.

  • Scalars, vectors, vector representation and types of vectors.
  • Vector addition, subtraction and scalar multiplication.
  • Linear combinations, span, linear dependence and independence.
  • Components, direction ratios and direction cosines.
  • Dot product, cross product, projections and area applications.
  • Coordinate geometry, straight lines, circles, tangents and normals.
  • Conic sections: parabola, ellipse and hyperbola.
  • Kinematics, projectiles, Newton’s laws, work, energy, power and equilibrium.
STA 121

Descriptive Statistics

This course introduces students to the collection, organisation, presentation and interpretation of data. It develops practical skills in summaries, charts, averages, dispersion, probability and elementary statistical relationships.

Major outline

  • Meaning of statistics, variables, data types, population and sample.
  • Methods of data collection and common errors in data collection.
  • Raw data, arrays, frequency tables, bar charts and pie charts.
  • Grouped data, histograms, frequency polygons and ogives.
  • Measures of location: mean, weighted mean, median, mode and quartiles.
  • Measures of dispersion: range, variance, standard deviation and coefficient of variation.
  • Skewness, kurtosis, elementary probability and probability distributions.
  • Binomial, Poisson, normal distribution, regression and correlation.
